In between the palm trees, you can see the utility pole cracked in half.

I was filming video footage of the smoke build up on South 8th Street at approximately 1pm in the afternoon on the corner of South 8th Street and T. J. Courson Road when after I turned off my video, I heard the sound of a car slam on brakes.

I turned my head and saw a black Honda Accord go up on the sidewalk, hit the edge of a traffic light pole and hit a utility pole so hard that it cracked in the middle of the pole about five foot from the point of impact.

Fernandina Beach Fire Department was dispatched, along with Fernandina Beach Police Department to direct traffic and Nassau County Sheriff’s Department showed up to write up an incident report.

Understanding Why Food Lion Is Leaving Florida

There seems to be a lot of misinformation and confusion about why Food Lion announced 2 weeks ago why they are leaving the State of Florida. However, since I have the inside story, I can clear up a lot of the confusion. On January 11th, Delhaize Group who owns Food Lion, announced that the Food Lion brand would completely be pulled out of Florida which would close all the Food Lion stores. This meant 113 stores across Florida, including the Food Lion on Sadler Road in Fernandina Beach, would be shutdown and 900 employees would be fired.

For the last 3 years, Food Lion has been trying to figure out operate their company with the rising fuel costs and subsequent rising food costs which are hurting a lot of families.

The biggest problem with Food Lion is Delhaize Group.

Other local media outlets have reported that Nassau County Sheriff’s Office has suspended a police radio program where NCSO leased out police radios for $60 per month and many rumors have circulated around town accusing Seagraves and NCSO of trying to “cover up” possible wrongdoing or scandalous behavior.

Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves

Sheriff Seagraves explained to me that indeed, the program was suspended for the safety of the public, members of the local media and officers. Seagraves further explained that what if the media showed up before the police if there was an incident of a suspect on the loose or a dangerous situation, the officer is focused on the media’s safety rather than tracking down the suspect or situation with the media being a distraction rather than being helpful.

Sheriff Seagraves also explained that if anyone was worried about transparency or think the department is secretive, why does he have 50 civilian volunteers and 10 pastors who help the department?

Rodney Odum, courtesy of FBPD

Rodney Young Odum, age 50, was arrested yesterday for contributing to the death of David Aaron Douglas, a college football player for the University of Alabama. Odum, a local cab driver, is accused of selling two pills of methadone to Mr. Douglas during Odum transporting him from allegedly the downtown area where Douglas had been partying and to the 2500 block of First Avenue on May 12th, 2011 in the early morning hours.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the death was from multiple drug toxicity and the methadone was enough to cause death even though carisoprodol (Soma, muscle relaxer), diazepam (Valium, anti-anxiety), meprobamate (Equanil, anti-anxiety), nordiazepam (Nordaz, muscle relaxant / tranquilizer), oxycodone (Oxycotin, opiate based pain reliever) and cannabinoids (marijuana) were found in Mr. Douglas’ system during the autopsy.

According to Fernandina Beach Police Department, Mr. Odum was a known mobile drug dealer using his taxi cab to hide his illicit activities as a drug dealer.

16 Drug Related Arrests in Nassau County In The Last Week

I heard from sources that there was 10 arrests within Nassau County on Friday so I did some research and after a phone call with Captain Foxworth of Fernandina Beach Police Department, he told me that it was a coordinated effort by FBPD and Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

I emailed my contact at NCSO but it was late Friday afternoon about 4:30pm so I did not expect to receive a response immediately because Captain Foxworth said they would have a press release.

However I did my own research and found the following information from sources.

My Nassau Leader has learned today that one of the group of people arrested in Fernandina Beach today was a convicted and registered sex offender who was electronically monitored with an ankle bracelet and GPS device. We are awaiting the press release from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, but we have learned that Gerald Peters, a 50 year old man who lived in the 400 block of South Fletcher Avenue, was one of the men accused of sale of a controlled substance.

According to the FDLE Sex Offender database, Peters was arrested in 2005 in Yulee and convicted in February of 2007 of lewd or lascivious conduct with a victim under 16 years old by an offender 18 years or older in violation of F.S. 800.04(6)(b) and sentenced to 5 years of sex offender probation and no jail time with 439 days served as credit.

On 11/13/2007, Gerald Peters was arrested for violation of probation and was sentenced to 100 days in prison on 2/7/2008 and on 10/9/2008, he was sentenced to 4 months in prison with 28 days credit for another violation of probation.

Peters has a small criminal record which includes an arrest in 2003 for misdemeanor operating without a contractor’s license which got him 90 days probation. He is currently now in the Nassau County jail on $25,002.00 bond for sale of a controlled substance, a second degree felony.

I had a  brief phone conversation with Captain Mark Foxworth of the Fernandina Beach Police Department and Captain Foxworth disclosed to me that it was coordinated between both FBPD and NCSO with NCSO making the arrests.
